Esports, or competitive video gaming, has become a popular pastime for millions of people around the world. While esports can be an exciting and engaging activity, it also comes with potential health risks. One area of concern is the effect of esports on hearing health. In 2020, a study published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health explored the relationship between esports and hearing health.

The study, titled "Prevalence of Tinnitus and Hearing Thresholds in Esports Players," involved 100 esports players from various countries. The researchers measured the participants' hearing thresholds and asked them about their history of tinnitus, or ringing in the ears. They also compared the participants' hearing thresholds to those of a control group of non-esports players.

The results of the study showed that esports players had a higher prevalence of tinnitus than the control group. Specifically, 59% of the esports players reported experiencing tinnitus, compared to 22% of the control group. The study also found that esports players had worse hearing thresholds than the control group, particularly in the high-frequency range.

The researchers noted that these findings are consistent with previous studies that have found a link between loud noise exposure and tinnitus and hearing loss. In esports, players often use headphones to communicate with their teammates and hear the game's sounds. The prolonged use of headphones at high volume levels may contribute to the increased risk of tinnitus and hearing loss among esports players.

The study's authors recommended that esports players receive regular hearing screenings and be educated about the risks of noise-induced hearing loss. They also suggested that esports organizations implement measures to reduce the risk of hearing damage, such as providing players with noise-cancelling headphones or limiting the maximum sound levels during competitions.

Hearing loss can also have a significant impact on an individual's life, particularly if it affects their ability to communicate effectively. It can make it difficult to hear conversations or important sounds, such as alarms or warnings, which can impact safety.

Esports players are not the only individuals at risk of hearing damage. People who work in loud environments, such as construction sites, manufacturing plants, or music concerts, are also at risk. However, the findings of the 2020 study highlight the need for increased awareness of the potential risks of esports on hearing health and the need for measures to protect players.

Individuals can also take steps to protect their hearing health when playing video games. They can reduce the volume of their headphones and take regular breaks to give their ears a rest. They can also consider using noise-cancelling headphones or earplugs to reduce the overall noise exposure.

In summation, the 2020 study published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health highlights the potential risks of esports on hearing health. Esports players may be at higher risk for tinnitus and hearing loss due to the loud and prolonged use of headphones during gameplay. To protect the hearing health of esports players, measures should be taken to reduce the risk of noise-induced hearing loss and provide regular hearing screenings.
